Southard wins District 100, Taylor vows to try again

Eddy Southard

MONCKS CORNER -- Republican Eddy Southard won Tuesday's special election to fill the House District 100 seat of the late Rep. David Umphlett, a Moncks Corner Republican, according to unofficial returns.

But Democrat Tonia Aiken-Taylor, a Moncks Corner council member and pastor, was not upset. She plans to run again next November when the seat comes up for election again.

"This was just a practice run," she said after the vote.

Southard took 60 percent of the vote in an unusually heavy turnout for a special election. About 20 percent of more than 17,000 registered voters participated.
