MONCKS CORNER -- Republican Eddy Southard won Tuesday's special election to fill the House District 100 seat of the late Rep. David Umphlett, according to unofficial returns.

Democrat Tonia Aiken-Taylor, a Moncks Corner council member and pastor, said she was not upset. She plans to run again next November when the seat comes up for election again.

"This was just a practice run," she said after the vote.

Southard, a contractor and Berkeley County Planning Commission chairman, took 60 percent of the vote in an unusually heavy turnout for a special election. About 20 percent of more than 17,000 registered voters participated.

The Berkeley County district includes part of Goose Creek, Moncks Corner, Whitesville, Macedonia, Pimlico and Cordesville.

Southard said his first task when he gets to Columbia will be to look into fraud with absentee voting.

"That's going to be my pet peeve," Southard said.

Southard also said he plans to run again next November.
