South Carolina's most recent Democratic governor has thrown his support behind state Sen. Vincent Sheheen.

Former Gov. Jim Hodges, who served from 1998 to 2002, endorsed Sheheen on Monday in Columbia, calling him "the best candidate to bring new jobs to South Carolina, the best candidate to reinvigorate public education, and the best candidate to lead the Democratic ticket to victory in November."

Sheheen is a Camden Democrat. He faces state Sen. Robert Ford of Charleston and state education Superintendent Jim Rex in the June primary.
