Runoffs set in Charleston, Folly

Laura Dukes Beck and Bill Moody

James Island and West Ashley voters who live in Charleston City Council District 11 will go to the polls Tuesday to decide a runoff race between Laura Dukes Beck and Bill Moody.

Moody, an accountant and former head of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, received 43 percent of the vote Nov. 8, but he needed more than 50 percent to avoid a runoff.

Beck, a lawyer who served on Folly Beach City Council before recently moving into the city, received 31 percent of the vote, more than publisher Andy Brack.

The seat is represented by Councilman Tim Mallard, who did not seek re-election.

On Folly Beach, Dale Stuckey and Sandy Hickman will face off for a City Council seat. They received 33 percent and 25 percent of the vote, respectively, two weeks ago.

Stuckey said she loves Folly and that her experiences as chief counsel to the S.C. Department of Education give her the expertise needed to solve "issues that were complex and controversial."

"I pride myself on my ability to help diverse groups of people reach consensus and achieve positive results," Stuckey said.

A radiation therapist at MUSC for more than 20 years, Hickman has been a Folly resident for 50 years. She said she's running to help keep Folly "the paradise" that it is to residents.

"People want growth to be under control and there to be no more commercialism than there is now," Hickman said.
