U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford will host Republican presidential hopeful Dr. Ben Carson in Mount Pleasant on Tuesday, according to an announcement from Sanford’s re-election campaign.
“Given the importance of the decision we’ll make in 2016, I think it’s particularly important that, when possible, you get a chance to meet them in person,” Sanford said in a message to supporters about the upcoming GOP presidential primary.
Carson will join Sanford at the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market at Moultrie Middle School on Tuesday beginning at 3:45 p.m.
“It’s a chance to visit and talk about what’s on your mind and what’s happening in Washington,” Sanford said.
The appearance is part of Sanford’s schedule of “neighborhood office” meetings with constituents.
Carson is a retired neurosurgeon and tea party favorite who is doing well in national polls. He announced his bid May 4.
The Carson visit is not an official endorsement. Sanford recently appeared with Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., at his South Carolina presidential campaign launch at Patriots Point. His showing there was not an official 2016 backing either, Sanford said at the time.
“Hopefully, this will not be the last chance we’ll be able to connect friends in the Lowcountry with candidates at the national level,” Sanford said.
