MONCKS CORNER -- Two town councilmen were re-elected Tuesday, and they will be joined by a former council member, according to unofficial results.

Incumbents David Dennis, a bank vice president, and Michael Lockliear, who owns a dry cleaning business, held their seats.

They will be joined by Laura Perdue, a nurse who was on council from 2006 to 2010.

The most talked-about issue before the election was providing more police and fire protection to recently annexed subdivisions of this growing town.

Perdue said she would push for a new fire station near Foxbank Plantation on U.S. Highway 52. Dennis and Lockliear said they favored waiting until the economy improves before taking on new debt.

Also Tuesday, Mayor William Peagler was re-elected without opposition. Residents also voted down an advisory referendum on curbside recycling.

The turnout was 9.7 percent, according to the Berkeley County Election Commission. All precincts were reported Tuesday.
