U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford took the oath of office today before a packed chamber in the House of Representatives.
“I look forward to working with you on a whole host of issues,” he said in brief remarks on the House floor, according to USA Today. Sanford also thanked the voters who elected him on May 7, calling them “a people who taught me a whole lot about love and humility ... about wisdom and grace.”
Sanford only briefly mentioned his 2009 downfall, where he tearfully admitted traveling to Argentina to visit his girlfriend, Maria Belen Chapur, as his staff said he was hiking the Appalachian Trail.
Chapur, now his fiancee, was in the visitor’s gallery, according to USA Today, as Sanford took his oath alongside his mother, sister and her children, and two of his four sons.
At noon, Sanford invited campaign volunteers and others into his new office in the Canon Office Building for an informal lunch.
