Rep. James Smith

Democratic 2018 gubernatorial candidate James Smith gathered endorsements from a handful of Lowcountry politicians, his campaign announced Tuesday.

The state representative from Columbia received backing from seven legislators: Sens. Marlon Kimpson of North Charleston and Margie Bright Matthews of Walterboro; Reps. Robert Brown of Hollywood, Wendell Gilliard of Charleston, Joe Jefferson of Pineville and Leon Stavrinakis of Charleston; and Rep.-elect Marvin Pendarvis of North Charleston.

Smith also won support from Charleston County Council Chairman Vic Rawl, Charleston County Treasurer Mary Tinkler and former state Reps. Floyd Breeland and Robert Barber.

Smith was endorsed by his long-time ally, Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin, on Monday.
