The House Ways and Means Committee has elected another Anderson County Republican as its next chairman.

The budget-writing committee on Tuesday elected Rep. Brian White, 43, of Anderson. He will replace Rep. Dan Cooper of Piedmont, who turned in his resignation last week.

Cooper's resignation is effective at noon June 29, after the regular session ends.

Cooper, 50, has been Ways and Means chairman since 2005.

Cooper is leaving the House seat he has held since he was elected in 1990. The committee gave Cooper a standing ovation Tuesday.

White is now first vice chairman. The committee elected Rep. Chip Limehouse of Mount Pleasant to that post.

The Ways and Means chairman is one of five members on the state's Budget and Control Board.
