MYRTLE BEACH — A Myrtle Beach woman is pulling out of the race for the Republican nomination for the new 7th Congressional District seat, citing her husband’s health problems.

Debbie Harwell says her husband developed health issues over the Christmas holiday.

Harwell says she needs to spend time with her husband and could not devote the time needed for the campaign in the new district centered on Horry County.

Harwell owns a government and public relations firm working on publically-funded projects in the area.

She is the second candidate to withdraw from the race in the past few days. State Rep. Thad Viers of Myrtle Beach withdrew Friday after being charged with first-degree harassment by his ex-girlfriend.

There still are 13 candidates in the race for the new seat.
