COLUMBIA, S.C. — Gov. Nikki Haley is encouraging residents to thank teachers for their contributions to children and South Carolina’s future.
The Republican governor issued a proclamation Thursday declaring May as Teacher Appreciation Month. She also congratulated Sumter High School teacher Suzanne Koty for being named state Teacher of the Year.
Koty and district teachers of the year from across the state were recognized in the Legislature on Thursday.
After issuing the proclamation, Haley said everyone should thank a teacher every day.
More than 51,000 teachers work in South Carolina’s public schools.
