The ongoing construction on four downtown public schools will shuffle several polling places for Tuesday's city of Charleston elections.

The city and county have found other sites nearby and are working to get the word out to minimize confusion, said Joseph Debney, director of the Charleston County Board of Elections and Voter Registration.

The changes include:

• The Charleston 6 polling place will change from Memminger Elementary to Charleston Day School at 15 Archdale St.

• The Charleston 7 polling place will change from Buist Academy to the Gaillard Auditorium.

• The Charleston 9 polling place will change from Charleston Progressive to Sanders Clyde Elementary, 805 Morrison Drive.

• The Charleston 17 polling place will change from James Simons Elementary to the Charleston Charter School for Math and Science, 1002 King St.

Debney said voters in those precincts have been sent new voter registration cards with the updated polling places, and his staff plans to put up large signs on the new and old sites by Election Day.

"We'll try to wait until the day before to put those up because we don't want someone to steal them," he said.
