FOLLY BEACH -- Five candidates, including a former mayor, will vie for a vacant Folly Beach City Council seat on Nov. 8.

The seat became vacant in August when Laura Beck resigned because she was moving off the island. The filing period for the special election closed Monday.

Vernon Knox, Folly Beach mayor from 1998-2006, will be on the ballot, along with Sandra Hickman, Dale Stuckey, Alan Kleinfeld and Lewis Dodson, according to Folly Beach Election Commission Clerk Mary Cunningham.

Beck had served more than five years on council when she announced she was moving to James Island. She has since announced she's seeking a Charleston City Council seat.

The Charleston County Board of Elections and Voter Registration said Oct. 8 is the last day to register to vote in any of the several municipal elections set for Nov. 8. For more information, see
