MONCKS CORNER — Don't bother to send an anonymous letter to Berkeley County Council members. There's a pretty good chance they won't bother to read them.

Council was wrapping up its monthly meeting Monday when Councilman Steve Davis brought up one final matter. He proposed that the clerks not pass on unsigned letters to council members, unless a member asked to keep getting them.

Most council members agreed with Davis.

'I just don't see how you can give any kind of credibility to an anonymous letter,' Jack Schurlknight said.

Bob Call said he was tired of wild accusations from people hiding behind anonymity. He said he wouldn't even read a letter with no return address.

Tim Callanan argued sometimes people send anonymous letters because they're afraid of retribution, and elected officials are responsible to consider those situations, he said.

The proposal passed, with Callanan voting against it. Cathy Davis was absent.
