MYRTLE BEACH — Former Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer has his eyes set on Congress as he seeks the GOP nomination in South Carolina’s new 7th Congressional District.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports Bauer has filed a statement of candidacy and formed an Andre Bauer for Congress committee listing his address as Myrtle Beach.

Bauer was defeated last year in his quest for the GOP nomination for governor. He says he’s been making phone calls to see if there is support for a congressional run and things look positive. He has not yet announced formally.

The new district was created in the northeastern corner of the state after the Census showed population gains.

Republicans Thad Viers, Mande Wilkes and Gary Stephens have already announced. Democrat Parnell Diggs is also running.
