MONCKS CORNER -- An annexation plan that Jameston officials hoped would reverse the decline of this tiny Berkeley County town was voted down Tuesday.
The annexation failed 48-32, according to unofficial election returns. The expansion would have more than tripled the town's population, which was 72 in the last census, down from 98 a decade earlier. The annexation would have added at least another 200 people to the town's population. The area to be annexed included 168 registered voters. A similar annexation plan also failed to pass a vote three years ago.
