A North Charleston firefighter was treated at a local hospital for heat exhaustion late Wednesday as firefighters fought for three and a half hours to bring a plant fire under control.

Battallion Chief Eric Phillips said the firefighter was released from a local hospital and that no one else was hurt during the blaze at National Starch & Chemical Co. at 7680 Southrail Road.

The fire fed off starch inside a five-story silo that was difficult to get to, Phillips said.

Firefighters were called to the plant about 8:30 p.m. when someone saw the fire and pulled the fire alarm. It was brought under control at about midnight.

A plant official on the scene would not comment.
