MONCKS CORNER — The lock at the Pinopolis Dam on Lake Moultrie reopened today, a week ahead of schedule following a 36-day outage for repairs.
Workers replaced a balky valve on the passage used by boaters and fish between the lake and the Tailrace Canal.
Located at the Jefferies Hydroelectric Station, the Santee Cooper-controlled lock has a single lift of 75 feet and is 60 feet wide and 180 feet long.
Its hours of operation are one-half hour after dawn until one-half hour before dusk, year round. The lock does not operate during thunderstorms or rough-water conditions.
Large parties of boats needing to use the lock may call in advance at 843-899-5625.
