SUMMERVILLE — Two men who tried to use a forklift to take an ATM from a bank in the Knightsville community early Monday are being sought by police. A passerby on his way to work stopped the 4 a.m. attempted theft when he yelled at them as he called a Dorchester County Sheriff's dispatcher.

Deputies are searching for two black men wearing hooded sweatshirts who drove off down Orangeburg Road in a red Dodge pickup truck. No further description was available, Sheriff's Maj. John Garrison said today. Investigators are reviewing the bank's security video and searching for the truck.

The suspects evidently hot-wired the forklift from a nearby construction site. One man drove it to the First Federal Savings and Loan at 1595 Central Ave., and rammed the ATM. A second man moved in with the pickup to collect the machine.

But a customer at a nearby convenience store saw what was going on as he came out with a soft drink on his way to work. ATM's, or automated teller machines, disperse money when a customer inserts a bank card.
