Mayor Joe Riley is working diligently to raise funds for a proposed African-American Museum with an added urgency because of the recent Emanuel AME Church tragedy. The estimated cost of the museum is $75 million.

As an alternative I might suggest a more lasting memorial than a museum.

Perhaps creating some community mental health programs and facilities to offer treatment and prevention of mental illness would be a more lasting legacy to our city.

A memorial to the Emanuel 9 could be placed prominently in the Charleston Museum or at Marion Square or Liberty Square or even the visitors center. The monies raised by Mayor Riley for a museum could be used to better our community.

Scholarships for studies in mental health, violence or other related subjects would go a long way towards building a system to possibly preclude future madness such as we have had. It seems to me a more positive approach .
