I take personal umbrage with Kirkpatrick Sale’s May 2 article basically disparaging everyone involved in the Vietnam War, from POWs to the soldiers who fought it.
As a combat medic, I flew on 518 combat missions, picking up over 1,100 wounded. I wonder if Mr. Sale, who I’m sure has never seen a shot fired in anger, would consider that those “sneaky yellow people” were fighting fair when they would wait till we were coming out, loaded with the wounded and slow, and then riddle our unarmed helicopter, painted with a large Red Cross, with heavy automatic fire.
He can’t even get his facts correct. The Battle of Ia Drang Valley was fought Nov. 14, 1965, not in the spring.
