Driving past St. Mary’s Field on Lockwood Boulevard these last two weeks, one cannot help but be struck by the beauty of the evening primroses blooming there. These are the remnants of what was a field of wildflowers planted over the entire field, if I remember correctly, after Hurricane Hugo. I believe that this was done by the Beach Company.

This community is well aware of numerous philanthropic gifts of the Beach Company family beginning with the Longs and continuing today with the Ways and the Darbys into the next generations. What an incredible legacy for a family, whose generosity has been felt by the entire community, if they would make a gift of the entire Sergeant Jasper/St. Mary’s field property to the city for a park. It would be their greatest legacy to a city which longs for more green space.
