It may be time for South Carolina to stop waving the Confederate flag, staunchly opposing social change and proudly proclaiming our rights to carry concealed weapons.

Let’s let go of the good ol’ boy status quo and stop dragging our heels on legislation that does things like protecting women against abusive husbands and reducing domestic violence.

Let’s celebrate our Southernness in ways that are inclusive. What if we addressed income inequality, tolerance and race under a banner of Southern Hospitality? What would it look like if all of our citizens felt welcomed in our state?

What if we took our Bible Belt sensibilities and decided to lead this nation, to become a model of reform, to actively work to eliminate racism and develop gun control laws that reduce violent crimes and keep citizens safe?
