City of Charleston tour guides are paid to comment on Charleston’s history, culture, architecture and contemporary issues. The editors and journalists of The Post and Courier are paid to comment on Charleston’s history, culture, architecture and contemporary issues. Therefore, I propose that City Council require editors and journalists to pass a test similar to the one required of tour guides.

As the Jan. 30 Post and Courier editorial said, it is important to assure the accuracy of what is communicated about Charleston. There is no free speech or free press issue here. After all, editors and journalists may publish whatever they want, but only after they pass the test.
