Catherine Rampell, “Graying of America,” April 6, makes a good point that we as a nation need to make a greater investment in our children. However, she completely misses the fundamental change that has created our current situation.

Traditionally, communities have supported their own young people. Charleston has many great organizations that focus on children, such as Kiwanis, Rotary, Dee Norton, Communities in Schools and more.

However, the growth of government has taken more money from individuals and bundled it at the state and federal levels, sucking billions into bureaucracies and diverting it in ways never desired by our communities.

What are our options when government takes our resources and misuses them?
