“Amen” to the S.C. House Ways and Means higher education subcommittee’s decision to shut down S.C. State University to pay off old debt. It’s time for some new thinking regarding the anachronism and embarrassment that is SCSU.
S.C. State is an idea that’s left over from racial days gone by — when “separate but equal” was the approved model for educational facilities. But times have changed, and this fiscally corrupt, barely-surviving institution should be put out of its misery.
College admissions should be color-blind. The subcommittee should stay its course and close SCSU to kill off “separate but equal.”
May SCSU RIP as South Carolina moves forward with a new community college in Orangeburg — one all races can be proud of and participate in.
