A number of years ago, my husband worked for the state of New Jersey as a police officer. He was one of several hundred who worked all over the state in cities, towns and rural areas performing investigations, picking up those with outstanding warrants, on highway patrol and performing other responsibilities. In four and a half years on the job, he never heard of anyone in that position shooting anyone or at anyone.

If you discharged your weapon for any reason, you had to report to the attorney general’s office in the state capitol, Trenton, to explain your reasons.

The difference? All of these were trained at the State Police Academy and had to return every four months for retraining.

Are you listening, South Carolina?
