I am pleased to see the West Ashley community starting to get the attention that its residents and leaders know it deserves. I recently participated in two encouraging community activities for the West Ashley area. The first event was the Dupont/Wappoo Area Planning Charrette.
The combined Charleston County and Charleston City presentation capped an intensive two-week effort of the community’s analysis of the area’s challenges and opportunities. Planning and engineering concepts and recommendations were then offered for this important region within West Ashley. This planning charrette was a cooperative collaboration between local residents and business owners, city and county staff, and engaged politicians.
The next day I attended a West Ashley and James Island Business Association meeting which featured Tom O’Rourke of the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission. Mr. O’Rourke spoke of the various countywide projects but also spoke specifically of the various county park efforts in the West Ashley area. These back-to-back events are strong indications of the budding interest in West Ashley as it continues to move forward to realize more of its vast potential. As one of the co-owners of a business within West Ashley, I’m glad to see its time has come, and there are many that want to see this continue.
