Last year we were visited by a couple from Finland. Although their English is perfect, they noticed some peculiarities in our usage.

It seemed that in just about every restaurant the waiter asked, “Are you guys ready to order?” The lady didn’t like that at all. They had learned in school that the proper response to “thank you” is “you’re welcome.” Here they heard all kinds of responses: “Sure thing,” “no problem,” “you bet,” “you betcha,” “any time,” and so on.
