A Jan. 22 letter makes a great case for supporting the new Fisher House that will serve veterans and their families while the vets undergo care at the Ralph Johnson VA Medical Center.

The writer’s suggestion to explore using vacant or abandoned federal buildings is a good one and has been addressed. Fortunately, we have been able to acquire a nearby property that will accommodate a new Fisher House structure. Its design will meet the specific needs of veterans and their family members and also important health and safety standards of the Fisher House Foundation.

But any Fisher House is more than a building. It allows resident families to support their wounded family member while undergoing medical care and therapy, and allows families to support each other. Along with the management, local volunteers will help see it all happen.

One requirement for the house that will be addressed is shuttle service to the center.

We look forward to providing updates on Fisher House of Charleston and identifying opportunities to support it. We vitally need the continued financial support of the Greater Charleston community.

For those wishing to contribute to the Charleston Fisher House project, information and donations can be processed on our website: www.fisherhousecharleston.org, or checks can be mailed to Fisher House Charleston, P.O. Box 829, Johns Island, S.C. 29457-0829.
