Ten years ago, Sen. Robert Ford wrote an op-ed for The Post and Courier with the title “Angry white male.” At the time, I remember thinking, “What a jerk.”

In light of the recent unlawful shooting, I now find myself in the awkward position of agreeing with him, albeit many years later, about an entirely different subject.

I am disgusted, ashamed, mad and embarrassed by the recent actions of Officer Michael Slager in North Charleston.

To Mr. Scott’s parents I offer my heartfelt condolences. I will be praying for the family during this awful time.

To those who would take this opportunity to stoke the fires of hate, I ask that you take a deep breath, and allow this family to grieve.

Too many times we want to point a finger and blame someone. That’s only natural. But we should take this time to pray for the family, and, as hard as it might be, pray for Officer Slager and his family.
