The party of Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt is unrecognizable today. I doubt that even more recent Republican presidents would have countenanced Congress interfering in foreign policy that held hostage the security of our country for ideological purposes, inviting a foreign leader to deliver a speech that would undermine our nation and world leaders’ efforts to avoid nuclear weapon expansion, and co-signing a letter to a foreign leader to disrupt negotiations that were designed to prevent his development of nuclear weapons.

In just two and one-half months, the new Republican majority had taken actions unworthy of what was once the “Grand Old Party.” Their measures were unpatriotic on their face by disrespecting the office of the president of the United States, making a diplomatic solution less possible and war more possible, and embarrassing our nation on the world stage.
