Rowan County (Ky.) Clerk Kim Davis refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples because “it is a Heaven or Hell decision.”

But when she took her oath of office she said she would “solemnly swear” to fulfill the duties of her office “according to law … so help me God.”

Perhaps disregarding an oath before God is also a “Heaven or Hell decision.”

How does Ms. Davis square her conscience with her oath of office?

A major reason we have the Constitution is to ensure rule of law, not rule of man. Standing up for one’s convictions is noble, but we are responsible for the decisions we make and the consequences.

Crisis of conscience notwithstanding, if Ms. Davis is making decisions on her own as to what laws to enforce or not according to personal and religious belief, have we just reverted to rule of man over rule of law?
