In an April 8 letter the writer said, “If [enforced voting]scammed into law somehow, our Republic would be doomed to become a total welfare state.” Well, I guess that’s true if by getting 80 percent to 90 percent of the electorate to vote instead of a disgraceful 40 percent, that’s what they vote for.

And if the majority of 80-90 percent wants a “welfare state” or “a Koch state” that’s what you’ll get. But at least it will be a broad base of the population making that decision, not just those influenced by PACs.

Sorry if this will “change the political map of our country.” If a real majority of people want to change the political map of our country ... I think that’s called a democracy.
