While a recent letter writer did raise some good points (solutions) to resolve the budget problems within the Department of Defense, I believe the solution would be to cut the “use it or lose it” mentality within the department.
Although the “bean counters” would save money if they eliminated the commissaries, base recreation facilities and Chaplain Corps, morale would be gravely affected, re-enlistments would be down, thus indeed saving money. (No personnel, no pay, right?)
Perhaps if the reader concerned himself with issues affecting enlisted personnel (active and retired), he would see that people like a choice in where they shop and worship. We like to save money but also shop somewhere with confidence of the food’s safety. If you choose not to avail yourself of base facilities, so be it; but many of us depend on them. We like to count our blessings and our pennies.
