Approximately 99.5 percent of the world’s scientists believe that humans are causing climate change and that climate change is a real threat to our survival. To put that in perspective, the number of scientists who believe in climate change is roughly the same as the number who believe in the theory of gravity, that viruses can cause diseases or the sky is blue.
The number of scientists who doubt climate change is about the same as the number who don’t think smoking causes cancer. It is not exactly the raging scientific debate Republicans tell us it is.
For decades after we knew the risks of smoking, tobacco companies funded bogus research. Some Republicans blocked efforts to curb smoking and protected the tobacco companies because of the “scientific debate” about the health risks.
For decades the fossil fuel industry has funded bogus research on climate change. Republicans have blocked efforts to transition to cheaper renewable energy or take actions to address climate change. Fourteen of the last 15 years have been the hottest ever recorded on Earth. Faced with that evidence, some Republican “thinkers” have started saying the earth isn’t heating up any more.
I’m not saying the Republicans would lie about climate change to protect the billions of dollars in campaign contributions they get from the fossil fuel industry. But, no matter what they tell me, smoking is bad for you, the sky is blue and climate change is real.
