The June 17 murder of Rev. Clementa Pinckney and eight other men and women in Charleston’s historic Emanuel AME Church brought forth the most moving example of Christian love I have ever seen in my 79 years on this Earth. The parishioners, led by Rev. Norvel Goff, Sr., shared a moving and uplifting service for members and friends they had so tragically lost.
Outside, a large diverse crowd prayed and joined hands, as did hundreds more in Marion Square Park and elsewhere in the Holy City to the sound of bells chiming from Charleston’s many churches. Later, thousands of these same people joined hands and moved with tears and sadness across the Ravenel Bridge to honor the fallen.
And in a gesture of amazing Christian grace, the families of those who had been murdered unequivocally forgave the evildoer.
Every school child, indeed every American, should see these incredible demonstrations of love and truly “amazing grace.”
