On May 21, while playing golf at Charleston’s Municipal Golf Course, I first heard and then viewed one of the most memorable sights I’ve ever seen — 15 majestic C-17s sweeping through the air almost directly above me in perfect in-trail formation. They were soon joined by six more transports flying on a different heading.
Looking at this procession, I felt proud of the men and women flying these aircraft. I felt proud of the team that put them there. But mostly I felt immensely proud of America for giving us such genuine, selfless and patriotic Americans. When I awoke the following morning, these thoughts continued to pervade my thinking — along with a somewhat disturbing thought:
Why can’t a significant majority of our elected politicians follow the military’s example and serve our country with equal distinction?
