Regardless of the outcome of the Ashley bridge lane closure test, it is simply irresponsible for public officials to squander $2 million on a lane conversion that we have already been told will have to be reversed in a few years.
It is especially irresponsible in view of the fact that the completion of I-526 is at risk because of a lack of funds.
While having bicycle access to the peninsula would be desirable, completion of I-526 is far more critical to the future of the area. The existing opportunity to do so must not be lost, even if it means first completing only a couple of the lanes. Two million dollars will not cover the shortfall, but it would help. Our leaders have their priorities confused; they need to show some leadership or get out of the way for new leaders who will.
