Recently at low tide I walked to the north end of Seabrook Island’s beach to watch the extraction of a sunken bulldozer and dump truck from Captain Sam’s Inlet.
There they were: two great machines whose purpose was to aid humankind, mired in the muck, sunk by their drivers and unable to accomplish their tasks.
As I stood there, I could not help but think that this image was a sadly perfect metaphor for Republican governance of South Carolina.
