A Dec. 13 letter titled “Sensible biking” is correct to assert that bicyclists carry the same responsibility as motorists. It’s important that the bicycling community understand this responsibility and ride accordingly.
However, the letter writer is misinformed about one thing. Bicyclists are permitted to ride on sidewalks under certain circumstances (when the adjacent roadway doesn’t have a bike lane and the posted speed limit is higher than 35 mph, and when the rider is 12 years old or younger). Those and other exceptions are spelled out in the city of Charleston’s traffic regulations for bicyclists (see Sec. 19-125. Riding on sidewalks).
