I owe a substantial apology to Gov. Nikki Haley. After I realized that I had lost my cousin, Cynthia Graham Hurd, in the despicable massacre at Emanuel AME Church on June 17, I watched Gov. Haley “tear up” at her press conference on TV. I verbally and vocally accused my governor of shedding crocodile tears.

Without apology, let me state that I am a confirmed integrationist. I know that although we falter, our goal has always been to become a greater nation.

It may not happen in my lifetime, but I firmly believe that as a nation we will become one people with liberty and justice for all.

Gov. Haley, you have taken a meaningful step in that direction. I appreciate you.
