The U.S. Constitution guarantees that all incarcerated suspects be considered for release on bail while awaiting trial. That requires assurance that the suspect is not a flight risk or a danger to the community.

What I saw on the video was Michael Slager shooting Walter Scott in the back five times. Mr. Slager then appeared to alter the crime scene by misplacing his taser that had been struggled over. He then allegedly lied to cover his actions. In my view he is a danger to the community.

Mr. Slager is facing life in prison if convicted of murder. Ex-policemen don’t fare well in prison. With the evidence against him I don’t think he has a chance of a “not guilty” verdict.

A flight risk?

If ever there was anyone undeserving of bail, it is Mr. Slager.

Let’s hope and pray that Circuit Judge Clifton Newman sees it that way.
