The April 13 Post and Courier carried a column on “Tax Freedom Day” written by Andy Koenig, a senior policy advisor at Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce.

Readers may find it of interest to know just who Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce is.

The answer can be found in “Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right.” Author Jane Mayer is a staff writer for The New Yorker and author of three bestselling, critically acclaimed narrative nonfiction books.

In “Dark Money,” she identifies Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce as a significant part of the billionaire Koch brothers’ “business league” and as financing much of the fight to kill the Affordable Care Act. It by no means resembles the Greater Charleston Chamber of Commerce or the South Carolina State Chamber.

Mayer reports how Freedom Partners financed a disinformation campaign and front group that spread fear and confusion. Contemporary news reports reflected a widespread belief, particularly in desperately poor areas, that the government was setting up “death panels.” The Freedom Partners’ role was part of the overall Koch operation.
