So who’s the next Nazi on the Democrats’ list of odious analogies to Republicans? Herman Goering? Heinrich Himmler? Martin Bormann?
South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Dick Harpootlian extended that appalling roster Wednesday.
S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley is among the Republicans holding opposition press briefings in a basement studio at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte during the Democratic Convention in the Queen City this week. Mr. Harpootlian told a state delegation breakfast: “She was down in the bunker, a la Eva Braun.” (Braun was Mrs. Adolf Hitler for less than two full days before the couple committed suicide in a bunker as Soviet troops overran Berlin.)
Gov. Haley responded with apt scorn Wednesday afternoon, telling reporters that Mr. Harpootlian is “an angry, hateful man” who “embarrasses South Carolina every time he opens his mouth.”
And while Mr. Harpootlian’s many offensive comments through his many frustrated years of watching the GOP take political control of this state have occasionally been somewhat original, in this especially ugly case he sounded like a copycat.
Another conventioneer, California Democratic Party Chairman John Burton, said Monday of Republicans, including vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan: “They lie and they don’t care if people think they lie.” He linked their tactics to those of Nazi propaganda minister “Joseph Goebbels — it’s the big lie, you keep repeating it.”
Pat Lehman, dean of the Kansas Democratic delegation, then got in on the Third Reich reference wallowing while condemning GOP support for voter ID laws. Unfortunately, he got the originator of the “big lie” concept wrong (it was Goebbels’ creation):
“It’s like Hitler said, if you’re going to tell a lie, tell a big lie. And if you tell it often enough and say it in a loud enough voice, some people are going to believe you.”
At least Supreme Allied Commander— and Republican icon — Dwight Eisenhower didn’t live long enough to see Democrats sink this low.
But when Democratic officials repeatedly liken Republicans to Nazis, it’s easy to see who the biggest liars are.
