University of South Carolina President Andrew Sorensen is expected to announce today that he is resigning effective July 2008.

Sorensen, who has led the school since 2002, was expected to make a formal announcement at a news conference this afternoon.

The 69-year-old Sorensen has drawn praise for his efforts to bolster the school's standing as a research university and for forging closer ties with Clemson and the Medical University of South Carolina.

USC is the state's largest school with about 27,000 students.
