An Italian import will soon be wheeling its way into metro Charleston.
Charlotte-based Hendrick Automotive Group plans to open a new Fiat dealership, possibly by this summer, in North Charleston.
Construction should begin in the spring on a 3,800-square-foot showroom beside Rick Hendrick's Jeep Chrysler Dodge Ram car lot on Rivers Avenue, according to dealership general manager Jeremy Jimenez, who will also oversee Fiat sales.
"The goal is to ease into it with Fiat and then come behind it with Alfa Romeo," Jimenez said. "We want to open by mid- to late-summer or definitely by the end of the year."
The Fiat dealership will be one of two new ones in South Carolina.
Another one will be added in the Upstate on Greer's motor mile.
Jim Benson, owner of Benson Automotive, said he plans to start construction in March on a new 4,400-square-foot Fiat showroom and dealership on Wade Hampton Boulevard beside Benson Chrysler Jeep Dodge, one of four car brands he already sells in the Upstate.
The nearest existing Fiat dealership to Charleston and the Upstate is in Fort Mill.
