Charleston police bust East Side store

Police said they shut down an illegal store Wednesday on the East Side.

During execution of a search warrant on Aiken Street, officers confiscated two coolers, two refrigerators, 82 cans of soda, 351 cans and bottles of beer and wine, a bottle of liquor, and $98 in cash, police public information officer Charles Francis said.

Willie Nelson, 52, of Meeting Street, is accused of operating the store and was issued a summons for the unlawful sale of alcohol, Francis said.

C-17 formation part of Air Force mission

A large formation of C-17 cargo planes flew over the Charleston metro area Thursday as part of an Air Force training mission.

The 15-plane group flew over Charleston Air Force Base, practiced refueling over the Atlantic Ocean and dropped payloads over its training field in Orangeburg County, public affairs officer Rose Alexander said.

This is the third year for the training session near the holidays because more planes are available, she said.
