The Charleston area real estate market showed some encouraging signs in January, with residential sales up 10 percent compared to January 2011, the Charleston Trident Association of Realtors said this afternoon.

The association said it was the best January for residential sales since 2008.

"We're starting the year off on the right foot," said CTAR President Herb Koger.

Last year, sales volume across the tri-county area increased by 6 percent, but prices declined about 3 percent.

In January, the median price of a residential sale was 5 percent higher than the prior January, at $179,000.
