Guy E. Beatty Jr., a real estate developer who donated more than $60 million to the College of Charleston, died Oct. 4 at his home in McLean, Va. He was 80.

Beatty founded Beatty Companies, a Virginia-based real estate development business, in 1962.

Beatty lived in Charleston and McLean.

He established and managed more than 40 companies and organizations in real estate, entertainment and music. He also served on the College of Charleston Board of Directors.

He donated $60 million to the College of Charleston in 2008, the largest single donation to a public institution of higher education in South Carolina. It funds scholarships, buildings and infrastructure.

He had previously donated $2 million to the college for the Beatty Center, which houses the School of Business and Economics, and set up the Guy Beatty Scholarship Fund, which gives $75,000 annually to Business and Economics students.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Beatty, one son, John, one daughter, Susi, nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will hold a private memorial service. Everly Funeral Home of Fairfax, Va., is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the MUSC Children’s Hospital Fund.
